Save Lives - Rebuild Mullaperiyar Dam in Idukki, Kerala
The Issue
The issue is about a dam by the name ‘MULLAPERIYAR’, which is built over the 'PERIYAR' river in the Idukki district Kerala, India. It was built 115 years back and it's actual expected life was just for 50 years given by its engineers. Moreover, the dam was built with stone and a mixture of sugar and Calcium oxide.. Also the high hazard this dam poses a direct threat to the lives and property of 35 lakhs people living downstream and also a threat to the mega storage Idukki reservoir.
CESS (Center for Earth Science Studies), Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee and Indian Institute of Science Bangalore, have reported that the dam cannot withstand earthquakes above 6 point on the Richter scale.
Himanshu Thakkar, coordinator of the South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers & People states, "The facts are simple, but not pretty: A dam that is now 116 year old developed leaks and cracks during the earthquake in 1979. Recently, at least four earthquake tremors since July 2011 (as accepted by Tamil Nadu in an application before the Supreme Court filed on December 1) are only the latest of the seismic activity in the dam area in this context.
I request people of Tamil Nadu to support us in this regard.
It is now or never we take the action, make us heard and make the Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Indian government do something with immediate effect!
