Thank you for supporting this petition!
Today Jay Weatherill announced a new energy security plan, including a commitment to build 100MW of grid-based battery storage.
The SA Government is starting a fund for projects that build storage across the grid, and requiring new generation projects to demonstrate how they contribute to energy security.
Our goal was to make sure Jay Weatherill committed to an environmentally sound solution to the State’s energy problems by building at least 100MW of battery storage, and we’ve reached our goal!
With almost 20,000 supporters in four days, we’ve also sent a strong message to Malcolm Turnbull that there is massive public support for new cleaner technologies.
Thank you again for your support!
If you’d like to take this further, please take a moment to read below how you can still help:
Unfortunately, SA’s bid to become a leader in renewable technologies is being blocked at the federal level.
That’s because the way electricity is priced by the national energy market favours the generation and transmission of power, not power storage.
Currently, electricity prices are bid in five minute intervals, but the price is then averaged over half an hour. This takes away a major advantage a battery system has over a carbon-heavy gas generator – because the battery’s ability to respond immediately while the gas generator fires up is just priced out.
Large scale storage projects are therefore less viable because they can't capture all the revenue that should be available to them, simply because of the way regulations for the market have been established!
These rules benefit dirty power, and stand in the way of a more secure energy future for our
State, but would be very easy to change by the Council of Australian Governments, chaired by Malcolm Turnbull.
Another impediment to renewables is the federal government’s opposition to the national Emissions Intensity Scheme (EIS), despite widespread support for this from the energy industry. Again, if implemented, the NEIS would strengthen the economic case for renewables.
Our campaign was a great success, but now we need Malcolm Turnbull to play his part.
If you have a minute you can help, by doing one of two things.
1. Can you tweet to thank Jay Weatherill for his commitment to build a 100MW battery and at the same time ask Malcolm Turnbull why he is still refusing to support the emissions intensity scheme?
2. Can you send an email to Malcolm Turnbull asking him to reform the national energy market rules that hold back investment in large scale storage projects and clean technology.
Here’s an example of a letter you could write, please feel free to edit it with your own (polite!) thoughts, or just copy and paste!
Dear Prime Minister,
I recently supported a petition to build battery storage in South Australia to solve our State’s energy problems, along with nearly 20,000 other people.
I’m really supportive of low carbon technology, and can see the economic opportunities that renewables can bring to South Australia.
You recently tweeted that you’ve been talking to Elon Musk about this, so I was really disappointed to find out that investment in grid-scale storage projects is being blocked at the federal level.
If you were serious about supporting battery technology, you would:
(i) Fix the outdated national energy market regulations that are biased towards energy generators over battery storage at the next Council of Australian Governments meeting.
(ii) Support and implement the National Emissions Intensity Scheme immediately.
Yours,
