Stop debt collection in washington state throughout the COVID-19 epidemic
The Issue
Dear Office of Governor Inslee; Washington State Representatives; Office of the Attorney General Bob Ferguson;
Please consider haulting practices for debt collection agencies during the COVID-19 crisis and initiate change for the future of washintonians. During this crisis, many washintonians who were already struggling before are struggling even more so now. Many will also continue to struggle long after the crisis is over. Currently, debt collection agencies still continue to operate/practice, persue, garnish and victimize our fellow citizens during theese trying times.
For the current and future stability of your fellow washintonians, considing specifying debt collection agencies as non essential buisness during the COVID-19 crisis and haulting collections would be a great help. We currently sport a severely preditory 12 percent interest rate in washington state effective on debt collections. 12 percent is of the highest interest rates of the entire US, the average is 7.8 percent respectivly. On top of this 12 percent collection agencies and their affiliated law firms/lawyers enjoy the ease of trippling a clients debt thru tacking on of endless fees and court expenses to the point that many citizens are pushed into a never ending cycle of debt they feel they cant escape. This and other predatory collection practices are long overdue to be addressed in our state, but even more so during this crisis. Washintonians will not be able to navigate this constantly evolving debt.
With many citizens living pay check to paycheck, and hard times befalling us all, collection agencies highly agressive practices can and will cause detrimental harm to many washintonians, especially in the light of our current epidemic and the superceeding issues it will cause. Washintonians dont deseve to be unfairly subjected to these attacks on our financial well being now or in the future.
Please take action, and help your fellow washintonians.
Thank you,
Concerned citizens
