Puyallup Water Warriors & Redefine Tacoma
Oct 1, 2019

Indigenous Leaders led a four-day, 46-mile Walk to Protect & Restore the Salish Sea from the Puyallup Estuary to the Washington State Capitol in Olympia.

Hundreds of people gathered on September 20. We met the Youth Climate Strike March in Tacoma to sing, drum, and chant "No LNG in the 253” in front of City Hall. The Mayor and City Council made promises to listen to youth concerns about PSE’s fracked gas project and Climate Emergency. Watch our meeting with Youth here: https://bit.ly/2n8ViWj

Miles down the road, we met with Washington Department of Ecology Regional Director asking him to rescind WDOE's permit for PSE’s fracked gas project and take back authority to redo the appalling environmental review. We also asked them to deny permits for the world’s largest methanol refinery proposed in Kalama.

Four days later, we gathered at the Sta,chas village site of the Nisqually Tribe, now Olympia State Capitol, to welcome the walkers. Indigenous leaders and allies continue to stand through the days & nights on the steps of the Capitol building. They are committed to staying until Governor Inslee meets with them and declares a Climate Emergency.

The people of the Salish Sea are rising to protect what we love. Stand with us to demand Governor Inslee honor the treaties, declare a Climate Emergency, and put an immediate stop to all fossil fuel expansion projects in Washington State.

"Hello, My name is_____ and I am calling in support of Protectors of the Salish Sea. Indigenous protectors and their allies are standing at Sta,chas, Nisqually village site, on the steps of the Capitol building, after walking 46 miles from the site of PSE’s fracked gas facility being built on Puyallup land in Tacoma to demand Governor Jay Inslee declare a climate emergency. I am calling to ask that our Governor meet with the Indigenous leaders immediately and act on climate change.

These demands are that Governor Inslee declare a climate emergency in Washington state, that he issue an executive order to stop fossil fuel expansion projects in the state, including the fracked gas LNG facility being built on Puyallup lands in Tacoma, that he convene a special legislative session on climate change in 2020, and that he honor the treaties by meeting these demands. Please tell Governor Inslee I support these demands and that I ask him to meet with Indigenous leaders and protectors today. Thank you."
