Last week Canoe Families paddled from all over the west coast to share in ceremony and protocol. This year the Canoe Journey was hosted by the Puyallup Tribe of Indians. Canoe families brought their medicines to share and bring healing to the waters of the Salish Sea. We pray that we all continue to bring our medicines to restore the Salish Sea and protect her from threatening fossil fuel projects.
Native Daily Network reports: Warm Welcome for Canoe Families
July 30, 2018
Honoring our Medicine. That is the theme for this year’s Canoe Journey which is currently in its final stages. The main event for many is the evocative experience of watching the multitude of beautifully created and sometimes colorful canoes come into land on the host’s territory. The landing was held on the 28th of July in Tacoma, Washington. In attendance to welcome the canoe families onto shore were the Puyallup tribal council and Connie McCloud the director of the tribe’s culture program. Chester Earl, Chairman of the Puyallup Tribal Canoe Committee, was the MC.
For a whole week after the landing, each canoe family will present themselves to the hosting tribe, one at a time, in what is known as Protocol. They will share stories, song and teachings as well as exchanging gifts with their hosts. The event will conclude on the 4th August with a closing ceremony.
