Puyallup Water Warriors & Redefine Tacoma

May 12, 2018
For over 40 years, Tokitae (aka "Lolita") has suffered away from her family, kept captive in the Miami Seaquarium. It’s time to bring her home. The Lummi Nation through the House of Tears Carvers, began a journey on May 9th with a 16-foot Killer Whale Totem Pole and two 8' Seal Poles from Lummi to Miami for the 2018 Tokitae Totem Pole Journey. The totem pole journey hosts events down the west coast from the Lummi Nation to Los Angeles and San Diego, and along the Gulf coast to the Miami Seaquarium. Protectors and advocates for Tokitae will address the latest efforts to bring her home to her native Salish Sea where her Mother and Family are still waiting for her.

This journey is not just about 'saving a whale,' but to protect the Salish Sea, Protect Salmon and Sea Life, solidifying our relationship to the QWEL HOLH MECH TEN, the people that live under the water. The journey is meant to educate people and communities of the 'Rights of Nature,' recognizing the trauma and resilience of a blackfish (killer whale) - Tokitae who was abducted from her (L-pod) family in Penn Cove, off Whidbey Island WA.
The goal is to bring Tokitae home to a rehabilitation center off MA QWEL MICH (Orcas Island) in the Salish Sea. When she is finally brought home from her small concrete dungeon (where she performs two shows a day at the Miami Seaquarium) to her southern residence blackfish 'L-pod' after 47-years in captivity. We have a rehabilitation plan for her, ultimately returning her to her family.
Tokitae represents a strengthening healing of body and spirit for her, for all of us, and for the sacred waters of the Salish Sea. Feel free to contact our team (totem pole on the road) should you have any questions at (360) 391-7560.
