Life Jacket Law needs to change

Life Jacket Law needs to change
The Issue
The current Washington State Law only requires children 12 and under to be wearing a life jacket in a watercraft while only requiring one life jacket per person to be in the vessel for any persons 12 years and older. I would like to see the law changed to require all persons, no matter what age, to be wearing a life jacket while in any watercraft unless it is a commercial fishing vessel. This change would help keep people safe and directly effects me because last July 2020 my son, Dylan Furford, was lost at sea from Tugidak Island, a uninhabited island off of Kodiak, Alaska. He was only 22 yrs old and I believe his body would have at least been recovered if he would have been wearing his life jacket. Dylan's life was cut way too short and I wish for no other mother nor family to endure the kind of pain that we have suffered. Wearing a life jacket should be just as important as wearing your seat belt and/or wearing a helmet. It is a proven fact that life jackets save lives. As we never know if an accident on land will occur, the same goes for an accident out on the water. I believe that we all must take life jacket safety seriously and pass Dylan's Law which requires everyone in all watercrafts to wear a life jacket. I wish to change the laws here at home, in Washington state before I try to petition a change of law in Alaska.
