Legalize ownership of exotic pets in Washington State such as foxes
The Issue
In my school, there has been countless animals brought in by students to show their classes, From pigeons and chickens to one person bringing in a pet kangaroo. I thought to myself surley this couldn't be legal, so I looked up the exotic pet law in Washington State, and it wasnt illegal to own a pet kangaroo in the state of Washington and no kind of permit is neccesary. I have owned pet sugar gliders in the past without having to receive a permit so it wasnt too surprising to me that kangaroos were not illegal to own in the state of Washington but one thing caught my eye when looking this law up. It is currently Illegal to own any form of Fox, Racoon, Skunk or Bat.
This thoroughly surprises me, it makes absolutely no sense that I can own a pet kangaroo in the state but I simply cannot own a pet fox or fennec fox. Many people are under the impression that foxes are dangerous, however, according to www.uk-wildlife-co.uk there on average is 10 fox attacks documented per year, and in every single case the fox was provoked or defending baby foxes. The truth is that foxes simply dont have the bravery to attack something even as large as a cat however, kangaroos are notorious for having the ability to kill medium sized animals like dogs and have even been known to attack humans if they feel threatened or want to establish dominance, in the past two years in austraila alone there have been an estimated 20 reports of kangaroo attacks, according to www.amazingaustralia.com.au
The truth is that we don't need to ban kangaroos or foxes, we simply need to legalize exotic animals as they are known to be way less dangerous than currently legal animals in washington state.
