Mr. Jason Oliver, Chair
Southeast Seattle District Council
Dear Mr. Oliver:
We are writing in support of the Friends of Hawthorne (FoH) PTA Neighborhood Street Fund grant application (#2016-76). The FoH proposal would provide much-needed safety improvements for not only the 500 preschool and elementary students who attend Hawthorne Elementary but, would also the other members of our community including seniors and those with disabilities.
The explosive growth in the Columbia City neighborhood over the past few years has resulted in a surge in student population and activity in and around our neighborhoods schools and parks. While we embrace this growth, it does produce impacts to our community, primarily, increased unmanaged traffic and speeding in our streets that put our school children and broader community at risk.
Hawthorne Elementary is a microcosm of South Seattle, with 74% of the students receiving free/reduced lunch, 32% English language learners and 19% Spectrum/APP. We are a community of diversity, with a family population that is 35% African American, 20% Asian, 16% white and 18% Latino/Hispanic. At Hawthorne we celebrate our cohesive and diverse community that unites families of all backgrounds and tenure in the Columbia City neighborhood.
The Hawthorne FoH Safer Pedestrian Connections grant proposal seeks funding from the City of Seattle’s Neighborhood Street Fund for enhanced pedestrian and bicycle improvements to and around the Hawthorne Elementary School. Specifically, the proposal request funding for arterial traffic calming devices along Genesee Avenue and sidewalk improvements around the Hawthorne community, which will mitigate impacts posed by the increasingly high volume of vehicle traffic to and around the school.
As a result, we the undersigned respectively request your support to the city for the Friends of Hawthorne Safer Pedestrian Connections Neighborhood Street Fund grant application.
