To cancel student debt for those with poverty-level income, first!
The Issue
Student Debt is a result due to Institutional Racism. Systemically, students who live in Poverty have faced a burden of being presented with financial opportunities once accepted to usually the public institution. The pressure of living with a family in poverty is a weighing catastrophe once enrolled in a university. Questions come up: (1) I believe in supporting my life and my family's life while in school, I'll decide to help them with loans? The student now sees the Pell grant as financial support, they see their Stafford Loans (e.g. subsidized & unsubsidized) as a means to pay rent, pay for food, cars are purchased for the first time, help mom's bills- Mother's who live in Poverty depend on their children as income through social welfare programs. There is a social dependency. But that expires when kids grow up. Minimum wage at full-time, can only cover your $800 monthly rent, your modest $212 monthly food note, your humble $20 hygiene routine kit, but it does not make up for the opportunity cost. The student must choose: attend classes full-time is selected- but without any financial distraction? These are Symptoms of systemic racism. So instead of hardship I'll take the loan.
