Beaver traditionally protected watersheds, fisheries and expanded wildlife habitat, while helping reduce wildfires in the state of California. Today, they are marginalized to a small fraction of their original range, and our environment is the worse for it.  Unlike with massive dams, beaver dams allow passage for fish spawning and protection of fish fingerlings. The beaver is not an isolated species but an ecosystem. The ponds it builds provide habitat for amphibians, fish, insects, reptiles, and mammals. These natural systems capture CO2 in plant growth, decay and burial. They retain moisture rather than allowing it to run unimpeded to the ocean in concrete culverts. This is a benefit to irrigation and prevents the droughts that can promote wildfires. Help protect and expand the range of this keystone species in California.
