The Issue

Growing up on the south side of Janesville, I've witnessed firsthand the numerous challenges our community faces. Houses are deteriorating, neighbors struggle with insufficient access to groceries, and small businesses are constantly closing their doors. Families are working tirelessly just to keep afloat, yet the city seems to disregard our needs, opting instead to invest in projects that aren't beneficial to low income residents.

The request for proposal to build a data center at the old General Motors plant is a clear indication of this negligence. Data centers, which require enormous amounts of electricity, are becoming significant nationwide. The energy consumption of these facilities not only leads to increased electricity costs but also results in environmental devastation. They cater to the wealthy and powerful, creating profits for a select few, while ordinary workers are left struggling to pay inflated utility bills.

Apart from the economic concerns, there’s also a severe environmental and health toll to consider. Their operations can release pollutants that potentially worsen air quality, leading to respiratory issues and other health-related problems in the community. Persistent heat and electromagnetic fields contribute further to adverse health outcomes.

Additionally, these facilities lead to increased light pollution, impacting the residents’ quality of life. For a population already struggling to make ends meet, these are burdens they can ill afford.

Moreover, the southside of Janesville is already a recognized food desert with many low-income residents needing access to affordable groceries and other essential services. Instead of building infrastructure that only serves big tech interests, the city should focus on initiatives that directly benefit the people living here. It’s time for Janesville to demonstrate accountability and true community support.

We must advocate for the needs of the southside residents, fostering an environment where they can thrive rather than be burdened further. By opposing the establishment of a data center on the southside, we send a strong message to the authorities that our communities can no longer be sacrificed for the gains of a few.

Sign this petition to oppose the data center plan at the old General Motors plant and help support the integrity and well-being of our community. Demand responsible and beneficial development in Janesville.
