Food companies should accurately list high fructose corn syrup on Canadian labels.
The Issue
Have you ever searched the ingredient list for high-fructose corn syrup in a food or beverage in Canada? At first glance, it may appear as though we've been spared from ingesting this processed sweetener. But alas, it's there. "Glucose-fructose," while a scientifically accurate name, is the misleading label given to high-fructose corn syrup here in Canada. And it's ubiquitous, in everything from soft drinks to BBQ sauce. As Wikipedia points out, " there is strong scientific consensus that the over-consumption of added sugar, including HFCS, is a major health problem."
HFCS has a nasty reputation, and for good reason. Now I'm not proposing a ban on the stuff; that would be breathtakingly naive. But the least that our friends in the food manufacturing business can do is to label it the same way they do in the U.S. You know they will never do this voluntarily, so the goal of this petition is to get the attention of Health Canada, and the Minister of Health, the Honourable Jane Philpott. Together, we can strongly urge those with the power to do so, to compel food companies to label HFCS accurately in Canada, just as they do south of the border. It's important to remember that food companies do not have our best interest in mind. They are primarily marketing firms that exist to make a profit for their shareholders. While that reality will likely never change, we can do our part to remind them that true power lies with the consumer. Let's make this happen!
