Reopen Jamia Millia Islamia
The Issue
*Reopen Jamia Millia Islamia! Reclaim our Campuses!*
Students and Teachers,
From the beginning of the anti-CAA-NRC-NPR movement, the Jamia Millia Islamia campus was shut down and from the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, the campus was completely shut down and the classes have been going on online mode. The situations were so severe and compelling that it was necessary to shut the campuses down. After the first wave, we demanded campus reopening and protested for it. As a result, it was decided to reopen the university in a slow paced manner.
Then the second wave broke out and slowly got over. Even after the ebbing of the second wave, the university hasn’t formulated any decisions to reopen the campuses. From that time, joint memorandums, statements etc were submitted 2-3 times and an appointment request was also sent to the proctor for meeting the Vice Chancellor for demanding reopening. But even after 2 months of submission of that request, not even a single response came from the side of the university. Through the continuing online education, the university administration is totally insensitive to the needs of the students in general and disadvantaged students in particular.
Now, they are trying to keep the campuses closed in the name of the third wave. But the question is that if fourth, fifth and sixth waves come, will the university keep the campus perpetually closed? The online mode of education is severely compromising the quality of education. Anyone who doesn’t have a good laptop or mobile phone and proper internet connection won’t be able to study. The biggest impediment for students’ education is the inaccessibility to central library and departmental libraries. At the same time, the basic facilities like Xerox point and canteen facilities should also be reopened.
So, we are jointly demanding that all the university libraries, canteens, and xerox points should be reopened within 15th January, i.e, from the beginning of the next session of classes. The university should release a notification related to that as fast as possible. Otherwise, the students will be launching a united mass campaign for reopening the campuses. We are also appealing the students to raise your voice for campus reopening and reclaiming the campuses.
