Guy Ritchie’s movie is a glass of Champagne. On a seaside balcony. While, like, a Serge Gainsbourg record plays. Here’s a Cold War movie that knows how to treat a lady. As with the TV show, our heroes are CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB agent Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer). Here, the two team up (very reluctantly) to foil a Nazi group bent on catastrophe; they’re joined by Gaby (Alicia Vikander), an East German mechanic whose rocket scientist father might be caught up in the evil plot. The villain is soon revealed to be glamorously evil Victoria (Elizabeth Debicki), rounding out a quartet of impossibly gorgeous people who look all the more perfect in ’60s fashion and against luxurious locales. Though the film’s true leads are the breathtaking Italian exteriors and Daniel Pemberton’s playful pastiche of a film score. Culling from a handful of genres (spaghetti western, giallo horror movie, heist caper), Pemberton’s score is the movie’s most valuable asset, pervading the whole endeavor with a jaunty vibe and winking sense of humor. This weird little gem comes freighted with some great expectations, as its director/co-writer, Jon Watts, has been hired to helm Marvel’s “Spider-Man” re-reboot. There’s an eyebrows-raised/arms-crossed feeling of “this better be good” that comes with watching it. And “Cop Car” is good. Watts has a confident handle on humor, suspense and telling a story through visuals and action instead of exposition and dialogue. If he’s still a strange pick for a billion dollar franchise, he’s not an inexplicable one. His new movie is a meld of Amblin Entertainment and midnight madness. Two young boys (James Freedson-Jackson and Hays Wellford, whose natural, relaxed performances suggest that Watts is good with actors) are running away from home. Trudging through the country, they come across an empty sheriff’s car with the keys still in it. I mean, of course they’re going to take it for a joy ride. But it turns out the cop car belongs to a deeply corrupt and deeply-er mustachioed small-town sheriff played by Kevin Bacon. Unbeknownst to the boys, the car contains some incriminating evidence, and Bacon’s character will stop at nothing to get it back. The plot eventually runs out of road, but not before a Bacon’s dozen of darkly funny scenes play out against those godforsaken Colorado vistas. And Mr. Bacon is a blast. His desperate dirty cop is so ingeniously resourceful in trying to get his car back that I was almost rooting for the guy.
