Most of you will be aware of the vitriol sparked by Yassmin's social media post. Well, not so much by the post, but rather by some questionable media representation thereof. The first few mainstream news articles I read about it appeared to suggest that her post was calling for us to acknowledge current oppression 'instead of' the ANZACs. I interpreted what she wrote as a reflection on the irony of there being such oppression still going on when the soldiers of the past supposedly fought for freedom. 'The war to end all wars' turned out not to be so and the cycle of war and violence continues. To me that is not only a legitimate way to honour the legacy of the soldiers, but a far more respectful one than the speeches made at commemorative events over the last decade by politicians. There has been another series of petitions being passed around among bigots, again calling for her sacking. Please show her your support.
