Green Space Request, James Island, Charleston SC, (Whitehouse Plantation-Dills Bluff Rd.)

The Issue

The Residence of James Island, SC 29412 are requesting to establish Charleston County, Land Parcel 4251200185, 5.2500 acres and Land Parcel 4251200298, 1.27 acres as Green Space. This is 6.5200 acres of adjoining land in the heart of James Island located between Whitehouse Plantation and Dills Bluff Rd. The land is currently owned by the James Island Public Service District (JIPSD). It has been brought to the attention of the Citizens of James Island that the JIPSD has proposed the possibility of selling partial, and or all, of this land to a Developer.

We request for this land to remain as Green Space for the Citizens of James Island and our visitors. Our suggestion is that this land be used as a Park with walking paths, bike trails, dog park, picnic area, playground and exercise stations. A Green Space may offer the opportunity for Town events to overflow from Town Hall and other neighboring properties.

We all understand it is the beauty of the environment around us that makes James Island so special. Its beauty promotes a peaceful atmosphere for its residence; that atmosphere makes us want to live here. Using this land for anything else may drive us away. We understand that funding any type of Green Space has its own budget and can be a challenge to develop and maintain the funding for such a task. Our recommendation for the JIPSD and Town of James Island is to write Grants to fund this Green Space.

If the Grant process is unsuccessful and other financial options are unavailable to support a developed Green Space, we respectfully request the land remain undisturbed as natural Green Space.
