It’s, of course, a Blumhouse Production entry and a sequel to the 2012 sleeper horror hit. That film, which starred Ethan Hawke and pulled in solid reviews, opened via Lions Gate Entertainment with $18 million and went on to earn $77m worldwide on a budget of just $3m. This sequel, which does not feature Ethan Hawke and received terrible reviews, earned just $10.633m on its opening weekend. It played 51% female, 57% 25 years old and younger, 22% Hispanic, 23%, African-American, and 42% Caucasian. Since Sinister 2 cost under $10 million to produce (which may be a record for a Blumhouse entry if it cost closer to $10m than $5m), we’re not dealing with significant damage here. The film will probably end its run with around $25m domestic and then hopefully make around that much overseas. But it’s a disappointment nonetheless. Oh well, I will catch it with the wife on DVD/VOD. But it’s another mixed signal for the whole “future of theatrical horror” situation that I’ve been whining about for a year. 20th Century Fox’s Hitman: Agent 47 was the franchise reboot that nobody wanted. The $35 million R-rated actioner earned just $8.2m on its first weekend. For comparison, the 2007 Hitman movie opened on Thanksgiving weekend of 2007 and that $24m budgeted thriller earned $21m in its first five days. Sadly, $21m is probably about where Hitman: Agent 47 ends up in totality in America, give or take. But Hitman made $99m worldwide, with just $39m of that coming from the states, so Fox is arguably banking more on overseas grosses than domestic ones. Still, Fox will be fine once The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials drops next month, and I imagine The Peanuts Movie will be a Lorax-style 1,000 lbs gorilla while Joy and The Revenant will put the studio the Oscar race. And frankly it’s stunning that in 22 years we haven’t really had an incontestably good video game movie. I may go into this later, but it’s inexplicable that someone somewhere hasn’t even accidentally made a really good movie that happens to be based on a video game. I mean, even those who hate comic book movies still tend to argue for the likes of Superman or The Dark Knight.
