Symmonds was the 800-meter champion at the U.S. Trials, but was left off the team after he refused to sign a statement of conditions required by USA Track and Field. The statement requires athletes to wear Nike gear at team functions and Symmonds is sponsored by Brooks. Symmonds also said he was protesting athletes estimated 8 percent take from a new Nike contract with USATF that pays $20 million annually. "Two years' worth of work to try to win another medal for my country are now down the drain," Symmonds told ESPN. "Is it frustrating? Of course. But no part of me regrets doing this." Symmonds, a two-time Olympian, had been among the favorites to challenge world-record holder David Rudisha, Botswana's Olympic silver medallist Nijel Amos, and Bosnia and Herzegovina's Amel Tuka, who has run a world-leading 1:42.51 this year. "I'm super excited about the opportunity. I'm grateful that it happened," Murphy told Runner's World. "I'm still kind of disappointed Nick wasn't able to work things out. He ran a great race at USAs. He completely deserved the spot. He's doing a couple of great things with trying to save the sport.'' Akron will have two athletes at the World Championships. Pole vaulter Shawn Barber competes for Canada. He won the Pan Am Games and has the third-best vault in the world this year (19-5½ ). The pole vault begins at 6:40 a.m. ET Saturday. Murphy, 20, was the first-alternate in the 800 meters after placing fourth at the U.S. team trials (1:45.59, an Akron school record).
