Jailhouse Coffee (Queens, NY) makes light of incarceration and solitary confinement in its name, motto, and brands, so we're demanding that they change their name and advertising campaign. The company website boasts of being located next to a “bighouse” and their brands, complete with cartoon images of incarceration and solitary confinement, include “Solitary Peru,” “Chain Gang Espresso,” and “Solitary Sumatra” among others. We live in a carceral state that breaks up families, devastates individuals, and reproduces structural inequality and racism. Despite having only 5% of the world's population, the U.S. has 25% of the world's prison population and systematically uses solitary confinement, which is a form of torture.
