Add a one-stop early voting site to Western Carolina University's campus.

We, the students and greater community of Western Carolina University, petition the Jackson County Board of Elections to add a one-stop early voting site on the campus of WCU. As a school with over 10,000 total students, we want to be actively engaged in elections at WCU. However, our current one-stop early voting site is a prohibitive 1.7 mile, 34-minute walk from the Hunter Library on campus and requires us to cross a busy four-lane intersection to get to the other side of Highway 107.  Many of our students are without vehicles, and the round trip time required for us to walk to the current early voting site and polling location at the Cullowhee Recreation Center is over an hour.  WCU students have extremely busy class and work schedules and cannot afford to miss class or work in order to go vote far away from campus.

In addition, Cullowhee, which is by far the largest precinct in Jackson County, would be well-served by including a one-stop early voting site on Western Carolina’s campus. Many Cullowhee voters live far away from the Recreation Center, and giving them the opportunity to vote at WCU will help all voters in Jackson County. Adding a one-stop early voting site at WCU will also allow the 1800 WCU faculty and staff to vote where they work when they may not have time before or after work to vote at the Recreation Center.

For all these reasons, we feel that adding a one-stop early voting site at Western Carolina will be hugely positive asset to the WCU, Cullowhee, and Jackson County Communities.
