Jackson County Assessor To Be Elected By The People

The Issue

Jackson County is the only county in Missouri with an appointed Assessor rather than an elected Assessor. Per state law, Jackson County has an exemption from the requirement of the Assessor being an elected position. Taxpayers have been subject to unfair assessment increases, denied due process throughout appeals and now eagerly await the outcome of the Missouri Attorney General's lawsuit against the county for unfair assessment practices.

County Administration has not taken responsibility for the tax debacle in 2023, and therefore should not have the responsibility of appointing this position. Rather, Jackson County citizens need an elected official that has the duty to respond to taxpayer needs. Taxpayer services are not being met and assessment practices have been unlawful.
