Stop the development on a wildlife property!

The Issue

In 1969 Bonnie Findlay and her brother Wallace Findlay founded The Bambi Bird & Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the first wildlife rehabilitation operations in Florida, on 31 acres of undeveloped, Australian pine-wooded land in Western Palm Beach County.

Bonnie was diagnosed with cancer soon after and passed away in 2000. But before she died, Bonnie decided to partner with The Folke Peterson Foundation, named after a South Florida dairy farmer who bequeathed more than $25 million dollars of his money to animal causes in 1989.

In 2004, Folke Peterson Wildlife Center opened its doors and kept Bonnie's wishes and dreams alive! Folke Peterson had about 5,500 patients a year. It cost roughly $500,000 a year to feed the animals, get their meds, keep up with the property and pay staff.

Despite all the effort from Folke Peterson staff to raise money, when the economy declined in 2009 so did the non-profit. It seemed Bonnie's dream would be no more. In July 2009 we had no choice but to close our doors.

In 2011, the building was leased to Big Dog Ranch Rescue with option to buy. Big Dog Rance Rescue should have not been able to be on the property because it was solely intended for wildlife, not domestics. They purchased in 2014 and recently sold the property to a developer.

The future plan for the 28 acres is to turn it into 309 apartments and 160 single family homes, which is not what the land was intended for when Bonnie past away. Please sign this petition to stop the building on the former Bambi Bird & Wildlife Sanctuary and help keep Bonnie's dream alive. But more importantly, lets sign it so the wildlife gets to keep their home!
