Keep real fur off your fashion pages

I am appalled that wearing real fur seems to be creeping back into acceptability. Celebrities such as Kate Moss and Kim Kardashian parade around in mink coats and fans of TOWIE sport their bobble hats topped with racoon fur.
Magazines and newspapers such as the Sunday Times don’t help by regularly featuring real fur on their fashion pages with items like fox fur handbags or mink fur key rings. As pictured above one of the Sunday Times leading journalists- AA Gill - once did a whole photoshoot for the magazine lounging on a bed of fur. You can see examples here, here and here.
Animals on fur farms spend their entire lives confined to cramped, filthy wire cages. Fur farmers use the cheapest and cruelest killing methods available, including suffocation, electrocution, gas, and poison. More than half the fur in the US and UK comes from China, where millions of rabbits, racoons, dogs, cats and other animals are bludgeoned, hanged, bled to death, and often skinned alive for their fur.
I think it's so sad the way these poor animals' fur is dyed in rainbow colours and distorted in order to detract from what they really are. Whether it came from an animal on a fur farm or one who was trapped in the wild, every fur coat, trinket, and bit of trim caused an animal tremendous suffering—and took away a life.
The fur trade is cruel and inhumane. We need people in the fashion industry to start standing up against it. The more they do, the less demand there will be and the fewer innocent animals there will be suffering horrible deaths.
Fashion supplements, like the Sunday Times Magazine, have the power to shape trends, to take a stance and decide “what’s hot and what’s not”. How about they use this power to say no to fur for good?
Come on Sunday Times - you’re one of the nation's favourite newspapers. Leading fashion magazines like Red as well as the Observer newspaper pride themselves on their anti-fur policies. Why don't you? Please listen to us, your readers, and stop advertising and supporting fur!
