Get Rid of Plastic and Styrofoam in Schools
The Issue
We, the undersigned, support the transition from plastic and styrofoam utensils, plates, bowls and cups to the use of compostable environmentally friendly options. Currently, the cafe only supplies plastics and styrofoam that are destroying our environment and our health. To contribute less to pollution in the environment, Schools should switch over and become an eco-friendly school. Even though biodegradable options do cost a little more, we believe that it is well worth it.
In addition to harming the Earth, styrofoam can also have a detrimental effect on people, especially when it is heated. In the 2014 National Toxicological Program report on carcinogens (page 1), it classifies styrene, which is a key component along with petroleum in making styrofoam, as "reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen" and linked to leukemia and lymphoma cancer. When kids eat from their plates, they ingest toxic chemicals that when manufactured have terrible effects on the biosphere and us.
Overall, plastic and styrofoam are neither good for our health nor are they beneficial for the environment. Please sign to keep students, teachers, and visitors healthy and also slow our school’s consumption of non-biodegradable waste.
