Reinstate all Twitter accounts that were suspended during Twitter's "avoidance" crackdown!
The Issue
On August 14th, Twitter Safety (@TwitterSafety) posted the following tweet:
"This week, we are suspending accounts for attempting to evade an account suspension. These accounts were previously suspended for abusive behavior or evading a previous suspension, and are not allowed to continue using Twitter."
So far over 290,000 accounts have been suspended indefinitely. While some accounts may have been rightfully suspended for promoting hateful content, some Twitter users were outright banned from the platform out of nowhere after having suspended accounts from several years ago (@GGFrosteX, @Ultra151x, and @scobesv2 to name a few.)
Twitter is a large platform for so many people: they use it to communicate their world views, promote user-friendly content, and for impressions that reach beyond Twitter and onto other platforms, such as YouTube and Twitch. By banning these accounts, Twitter hasn't only silenced these users, but they have also ruined their chances for gaining future impressions for some people's careers.
It is truly obvious that this method has not worked for several reasons outside of the ones listed above as well: some accounts that actually promote hateful content are still around or easily ducking their suspensions by making completely new accounts with new handles.
Along with accounts that have been suspended, the appeal process for Twitter users to regain access to their accounts is basically Hell. One must go through the basic appeal process, and even if on one's current account nothing was wrong, if something on his/her past accounts caused them to be suspended, even if these accounts haven't been active for 5+ years, these users' accounts cannot be reinstated.
Twitter has always had problems with suspending accounts wrongfully and letting users who actually promote hateful content run rampant over the guise of "free speech." If Twitter truly cared about being a friendly free-speech site, they wouldn't be doing this.
So now, Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, I and the rest of Twitter's remaining users are here to ask you this: reinstate all accounts that have been suspended and formally apologize. I also ask that you work harder with your moderation teams to help them understand what hateful content truly is.
