The breakneck speed with which English is being totally replaced in official titles and Place Names by Maori only shows the urgency with which we need to get English recognised as one of the official languages of New Zealand.

The translations and circumlocutions used in official titles in Maori are incomprehensible not only to English speakers but to Maori too. A quick search of Google translate (Maori) comes up with Taumata Arowai= "Checkpoint Level"  which does not convey anything to do with water authority or regulator. A proper search of the latest Dictionary of Modern Maori reveals Taumata as pinnacle/ hill/ambition or fulfillment and no such Maori word as "arowai"`.

Place names are quietly being replaced too. Howick Beach, a feature of the suburb Howick in Auckland, was quietly gazetted and changed to "Waipaparoa".Few residents know this but the NZ Geographical Board Gazette states " Current status: 'Altered' Feature type: 'Beach'  Other name for this feature: Howick Beach. This name is not official!

We cannot stress the urgency of spreading the word on the total replacement of English unless English is recognized as an official language with equal status with the Official Languages of NZ=Maori and NZ Sign Language.
