Stop the Gas Chamber Abuse Horrors at the Randolph Animal Control!
This petition had 10,356 supporters
The Randolph County Animal Control in North Carolina—under the authority of the Randolph County Health Department and County Commissioners—has sparked controversy with their double gas chamber, high kill rate of dogs and cats, and refusal of grant funds to remove the gas chambers. It’s time to let those responsible know, we demand change!
Here are the basic changes that need to be made as a mere start of overhauling this shelter:
• Please IMMEDIATELY STOP gassing animals in front other animals! The dogs in these outdoor runs can see, smell, and hear the screams from the animals dying and fighting for their last breaths knowing they are likely next in line for this torture death.
• Please IMMEDIATELY STOP stacking the animals’ dead bodies in seeing distance of other animals! This is complete terror to the animals who can see them. This is supposed to be an animal shelter, not a concentration camp.
• Please work with the large organization who you already took a grant from to remove the animal gas chambers and switch to humane EBI. Gas chambers are not only a cruel death to animals, but pose a risk to animal control officers.
Randolph is one of only about 12 animal shelters in North Carolina that still use the barbaric gas chamber. If all those other counties have found that EBI is the only humane way to put unwanted animals down, Randolph can do the same. The Humane Society of the United States is more than willing to help any shelter that will dismantle their gas chambers and train on humane EBI.
What Animal Organizations Say About Gassing
American Humane Association has stated, “…euthanizing shelter animals by carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide is inhumane to the animal and harmful to humans. American Humane Association considers euthanasia by injection (EBI) to be the only acceptable and humane means of euthanasia for all shelter animals.” Source: http://www.americanhumane.org/animals/stop-animal-abuse/advocacy/campaigns/stop-gassing-campaign.html
The Humane Society of the United States stated, "Carbon monoxide (CO) gas is, without question, an unacceptable method of euthanasia in states where shelters can legally obtain and administer sodium pentobarbital." Source: http://www.animalsheltering.org/resource_library/policies_and_guidelines/statement_on_euthanasia.html
The Association of Shelter Veterinarians has stated, "...the use of carbon monoxide for individual or mass companion animal euthanasia in shelters is unacceptable due to significant humane, operational and safety concerns." Please sign this petition that sends an email letter to the Randolph County Commissioners and NC Governor to demand change.
