Now, more than ever, we need a place to be outdoors, a place that is accessible to everyone but still a place of beauty. On May 7th, the NC Department of Transportation sold out our beautiful American Tobacco Trail to Dominion Energy for a measly $3 million to build a 6-mile pipeline. The planned pipeline would run alongside the trail from Massey Chapel Road in Durham to Morrisville Parkway in Cary and destroy all the trees in its path. Although Dominion Energy will replant trees, it will only be a 10-foot wide strip between the American Tobacco Trail and the 30-foot wide maintenance corridor for the pipeline, which will remain treeless. This route was chosen from 20 potential paths, most of which would have followed roadways. Work is planned to start September 2020, but permits need to be approved. There's still time to support this petition to stop the NCDOT and Dominion Energy from ruining one of the Triangle's crown jewels.
