Equitable Pandemic Relief for CPS Students NOW!

The Issue

As CPS families, we have 3 demands for Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Mayor Lori Lightfoot, & CEO of CPS Janice Jackson to meet to help ensure that Chicago’s students are prepared for long-term success.

1. We demand an official statement saying that all 642 schools under CPS (this includes Chicago Charter Schools) move to a pass/fail grading system that allows K-12 CPS students to pass the 2019/2020 school year.

Schools need to acknowledge the fact that there is an underlying issue in online learning because it is fundamentally built under a classist & elitist system that bases academic success on a student’s proficiency without accurately incorporating equitable measures for those who have limited resources at home. We ask that students can opt-in for letter grades if they request it.

2. We demand that all CPS schools forgive any payments that students may owe & properly allocate refunds for any events that were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Schools should forgive ALL student fees considering the fact that 78% of CPS students come from low-income backgrounds & have been hit the hardest with financial hardship due to the high unemployment rate across our city.

3. We demand that funding is prioritized for students in need of essential resources to ensure their academic success in case this pandemic prolongs into the 2020/2021 school year.

Schools must provide Google Chrome Computer Laptop Kits (Chromebook laptop and Wi-Fi hotspot kit) to every student in need of one, along with any necessary school supplies needed for online learning. Hundreds of students have been waitlisted to receive laptops, therefore it's unfair for students to be graded despite this long waiting period. Lastly, an initiative must be taken to amplify focus on providing for students that face domestic struggles, have 504 plan, or have an individual educational plan (IEP) by increasing awareness & resources for the duration of the pandemic.
