Allow Ivy League Student Athletes to Use Their 5th Year of Eligibility as Grad Students

Allow Ivy League Student Athletes to Use Their 5th Year of Eligibility as Grad Students
The Issue
The coronavirus pandemic is an unprecedented time for everyone. Unprecedented times call for changes in the status quo in order to mitigate consequences that may not have been present before. Ivy League student athletes face academic challenges when desiring to compete at their institution beyond four calendar years. Many are financially or academically unable to defer, take a 9th semester, withdraw, etc in order to use their 5th year as undergraduate students, which is the standing rule in the Ivy League. In order to accommodate those who had their spring 2020 season cancelled, their fall 2020 season cancelled, and seasons that may be cancelled in the future due to the coronavirus pandemic, Ivy League student athletes should be allowed to use their fifth year of eligibility to compete as graduate students within the Ivy League. This ability is common around the country at other colleges and universities, and Ivy League students that have been at their university, and represented it in their sport, should be granted the same privilege. To the Ivy League Council of Presidents, please consider changing the existing legislation and allowing Ivy League student athletes, who have lost a season due to COVID19, to use their 5th year of eligibility within the Ivy League. We just want to play!
