The Issue

Caledon East is home to people who have lived here for generations, families who have been here for years, and hundreds of new residents who have recently chosen to call this community home. As our population continues to grow, the services, businesses and infrastructure available to residents need to grow with us.

At the top of that list is access to essential healthcare.

Families should not have to leave their community whenever they need basic medical care. Caledon East needs walk-in clinics, family healthcare services, dental offices, pharmacies such as Shoppers Drug Mart or similar options, and other essential health and wellness services. As more families, children and seniors call this area home, convenient access to healthcare should be part of planning for our community’s growth.

We also need better access to the everyday necessities that make a community functional. More grocery and convenience options, banking and financial services, childcare, fitness facilities, personal-care services and other essential businesses would allow residents to meet more of their daily needs close to home.

And then there are the places that actually bring a community to life.

We want more restaurants, cafés and places to gather, including businesses such as Tim Hortons, Starbucks and other local or national businesses. We want shops and retail options that give residents reasons to spend their time and money within Caledon East rather than routinely travelling elsewhere.

These may seem like small things individually, but together they matter. A coffee shop can become the place where neighbours meet. A restaurant can become where families celebrate birthdays. A pharmacy nearby matters when your child is sick. A local clinic matters when you need medical attention and cannot wait days for an appointment. These are the places and services that help turn a collection of houses into a community.

But development cannot stop with businesses and services.

As Caledon East continues to grow, we need adequate street lighting, complete sidewalks, clearly marked crosswalks, safer intersections and roads capable of supporting a growing population. Residents should be able to safely move throughout their own neighbourhood.

We also need continued investment in parks, recreational facilities and welcoming community spaces where children can play, families can gather and neighbours can meet. More community events, seasonal activities, markets and local programming could help connect long-time residents with the many new families joining Caledon East.

We love the character of Caledon East. This petition is not asking for our community to become another Brampton or Toronto, nor are we asking for uncontrolled development. We want to preserve what makes Caledon East special while making sure the community evolves to meet the needs of the people who live here.

We recognize that the Town cannot simply tell a walk-in clinic, Shoppers Drug Mart, Tim Hortons, Starbucks or another private business to open here. But our local government, elected representatives and developers can help create the conditions that attract investment. They can ensure appropriate commercial space is available, work to attract businesses and services, prioritize necessary infrastructure and make commercial and community development part of the conversation as residential construction continues.

Residents also deserve to know what is planned. We want greater communication about the future of Caledon East, realistic timelines for planned infrastructure and amenities, and meaningful opportunities for residents to have a voice in decisions affecting our community.

A community is more than houses.

It is having somewhere nearby to take your child when they are sick. It is being able to pick up a prescription close to home. It is having somewhere to buy what your family needs. It is meeting a neighbour for coffee. It is having dinner locally instead of automatically driving elsewhere. It is children growing up with parks and community spaces around them. It is walking home on a properly lit street and feeling connected to the place where you live.

Caledon East already has the most important part: the people who call it home.

Now we need the healthcare, essential services, businesses, infrastructure and community spaces to support them.

By signing this petition, you are asking the Town of Caledon, our elected representatives, developers and other decision-makers to work with residents toward a clear plan for thoughtful, responsible development that serves both long-time and newer residents.

It’s time to develop Caledon East into the complete, connected and thriving community it deserves to be.
