Blowing the whistle on discriminatory slurs - a call for zero tolerance for on-field hate
The Issue
On 9/29 during the San Diego Loyal vs Phoenix Rising game, a homophobic slur was used against an openly gay player resulting in the Loyal leaving the field in protest and forfeiting the game. This was on the back of a similar instance the previous week, that time with race the focal point (that player was ultimately released by the LA Galaxy). If we are to truly affect changes in attitudes and our society, the teams that represent our communities should adopt a zero tolerance policy that will see them walk off of the field/court and if the act is proven to have occurred during a league review, then that should occur without penalty. Teams should also consider extending that zero tolerance policy to their players, with players found guilty of these instances released from their contracts/agreements immediately. Only with consequences like these may we see racism and homophobia stamped out of professional sports.
