We are deeply concerned that the Queensland government's Cabinet is considering last-minute changes (next Monday morning) to the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill to keep religious opponents happy. The Cabinet is responsible for the final format of the bill and will make this decision at a meeting on Monday.
If the religious opposition gets their way on Monday at a Cabinet meeting, it means those who are in their own homes, or in the last stages of life in a religiously operated hospital could be forced out of their homes or hospitals and have to find other places to access Voluntary Assisted Dying - at the very time when they are so ill. For many, even trying to move them to another facility would mean so much more suffering. All this is because those faith-based groups (in the minority) feel uncomfortable.
This endangers the very focus of the Bill that is going to be debated on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday next week.
Today supports were called upon to send an email to urge the Premier and Ministers NOT to allow this to happen. Guess what? The Parliamentary website crashed within an hour!
We cannot let this happen! Please email dpc@premiers.qld.gov.au and let the Premier know we do NOT want to allow religion to take over this Bill. We have worked too hard for this, waited too long, and the terminally ill deserve better.
Thank you!
Tanya :)
