A momentous day for New Zealand today as its Referendum saw Voluntary Assisted Dying finally pass to law (65.2% in favour and 33.8% against). You may know that the actual legislation was debated in Parliament after David Seymour MP brought a Private Members Bill a couple of years ago. The results today are preliminary results and the final results are due on 6 November 2020 - but the massive results today have meant that Voluntary Assisted Dying Legislation will be law in NZ.
Tasmania - the final vote in the Upper House was delayed today until 10 November. It looks like it is going to pass and will then go to the Lower House for debate.
Queensland heads to a state election tomorrow where the future of Voluntary Assisted Dying Legislation for Queenslanders will depend on the outcome of the election.
Everyone has their own personal preference when it comes to voting but a reminder that the Australian Labor Party has committed to progressing this and The Greens have a Voluntary Assisted Dying Policy and support the legislation. The LNP as a Party oppose the legislation and we do hold grave concerns that VAD as we know it, won't see the light of day for years if they win. :( This legislation, even if passed, won't come in time for me but I do hope it will come in time for all those who will follow in my footsteps.
Here's to Queensland!
Cheers
Tanya :)
