As part of my ongoing health advocacy, I want to welcome the launch of the HSE’s new five-year strategy, Action on Sepsis 2026-2030.

I have survived sepsis twice - first in January 2016, when the source was my appendix, and again on St Stephen’s Day in 2018, when the source was never established.

During the second episode, recognising the symptoms early helped to save my life. Sepsis can progress rapidly, which is why public awareness, early recognition and urgent treatment are so important.

I have written about my experiences, the warning signs everyone should know and why this new strategy must now be properly resourced and implemented across Ireland.

Learn the signs. Trust your instincts. Ask - could it be sepsis?
