We call on the ISPCA to run the pounds contracted to them as ''No Kill Shelters''. We also call for full transparency, no hidden records and no hidden dogs!

The Issue

The ISPCA is our National Charity for 'Prevention of Cruelty to Animals'. It is funded by the public with grants, donations, fundraising and of course the councils who pay the ISPCA to run some of their pounds which, is also public money. If a rescue in Leitrim can run the pound in that county with a no kill policy then there is NO reason why the ISPCA cannot do the same. Daisy pictured in this petition faced certain death at an ISPCA run pound after the August Bank Holiday weekend at an ISPCA run pound as the warden deemed her too aggressive. After assessment with an expert behaviorist this was proved to be untrue. Daisy is the face of Irish pound dogs all over the country and killing healthy dogs does not go hand in hand with prevention of cruelty to animals. The ISPCA could have and should have a fulltime behaviorist on their payroll. There should be no hidden dogs, no hidden records and full transparancy. With 19 affiliated charities which can assist in rehoming dogs from their 8 pounds there should be no dogs euthanized except in exceptional circumstances. They should be setting the standards. According to a rescue in Clare dogs surrendered are now going to be kept on a separate register not available to the public, what chance do these dogs have if hidden from the public. We want change, we do not accept records or dogs being hidden from the public. We want change or we want the ISPCA out of the pounds and them put to tender to rescues who will run them as 'No Kill Shelters'. The public are funding the ISPCA and the public want change!!! No more killing healthy dogs!!!
