At the end of the hunting season each year in Spain, the hunters dispose of thousands of their hunting hounds often by the most barbaric means imaginable. Accurate records are not kept. However, sources involved in the rescue of these hounds estimate that at least 60,000 Galgos and over 100,000 Podencos are disposed of. Other breeds used for hunting are Pointers, Setters and Bodeguero. Numbers of these breeds disposed of are unknown but also believed to be in their thousands. We ask the Government of Spain to enforce current legislation and introduce new legislation to prevent the abuse and suffering of these hunting hounds. Breeders of these hounds must be licensed, regulated and have in place documentation making the hounds traceable. Further more, hunters should keep accurate records of their hunting hounds showing where the hounds go to when retired. The current practices of slaughter, abuse and abandonment of otherwise healthy hounds in the name of tradition and heritage must stop immediately.
