We appreciate Mayor Sayers taking the time to formally respond to our petition. However, our position remains unchanged: we oppose the rezoning or development of any portion of this land.
While the City has stated that this proposal does not alter its long-term vision for the park, the reality is that no finalized park plan exists today, nor is one expected until 2027. In the meantime, once this land is rezoned and sold, it is gone permanently.
This area has fundamentally changed since it was labeled “surplus” in 2015 and allegedly listed for sale in 2018. Neighborhoods have grown around it, and current residents have used and cared for this space as a park for nearly a decade. Those residents are now asking the City Council to reassess and listen to what the community wants: to preserve this land in its entirety as park space.
The graphic shared by Mayor Sayers only underscores our concern—it clearly shows how much public land would be lost.
We are asking City Council and Mayor to pause, reconsider, and protect this land because it is what the residents of Lenexa and the residents of this area want.
