Is This What You’re Feeding Our Kids Jefferson County Schools? Not Acceptable!

The Issue

My Kids Attends Jefferson County School System, I believe our kids are not getting the adequate amount of food nor the proper food, I believe we as parents should have a choice choosing if we want our kids to eat at school or home. I don’t agree with accepting food from the school if we don’t trust our kids going into the school. When the pandemic started the school gave all parents who kids were on snap extra food assistance money because kids were not in school.

In Georgia all schools give each kid a card with food money on it every month to eat. P-EBT, Our kids are not eating healthy food and I believe that we as taxpayers should have a choice so we stand and say no this. It is all human rights to have a choice to say no more to unhealthy food and a school system who doesn’t care about what the kids eat. We want to prove that our school lunches are inadequate. Currently the school lunches are terrible.

We urge our principals the Jefferson County Board of Education, The State Of Alabama to act now to allow us to have a choice. Some families don’t have transportation and due to the pandemic they don’t leave home or trust people to cook for them or their kids. Some families don’t even have food and the little food they give isn’t enough. There’s nothing bad as a hungry child, hunched over an aching stomach as the day creeps toward its end. It’s a real shame about school lunches during this pandemic.

Jefferson County School System receives funding from the State Of Alabama to provide food for our children but if our children are not in school what are they doing with the money? Are they pocketing the money? The pandemic has everyone stressed and to know that we do not know where the school staff come from or how they live why do we have to eat from the schools. They shouldn’t be able to receive funding to feed our kids feeding them hot dogs and chips. I’m outraged and upset to watch our kids suffering from someone who wants to hound money and throw us the straps like dogs.

We Demand A Choice & Not Your Choice. Tax payers choice. I will not sit around and watch another child go hungry another night do to the negligence of school board who doesn’t care.

The USDA Agricultural Food And Nutrition Service stated school meals are required to meet specific nutrition standards to operate the school meals programs and this is not being done, they also stated schools are required to make menu substitutions for children who cannot eat the regular lunch or breakfast. Not being done!

The CDC stated Schools play an important role in shaping lifelong healthy eating habits by offering nutritious meals through federal child nutrition programs . School meals include milk, fruit, vegetables, and whole grains, and they provide key nutrients like calcium and fiber. Not being done! The CDC also stated It’s important for schools to communicate with families about the benefits of school meals and different meal options during in-person and virtual instruction. Not being done!

Processed foods that are high in fat, sugar, and salt have become a mainstay of lunches in schools across America and the results are in — experts say these unhealthy school lunches are a contributing factor to the childhood obesity epidemic, those problems can lead to children who don't perform as well in school.

In Georgia students are eligible for P-EBT if students are in a Georgia public school (including Georgia public charter schools) that participates in the federal free or reduced school lunch program. Those children are included in that program and are eligible to potentially receive P-EBT benefits so Alabama should follow suit.
