Requesting an additional 3rd grade teacher at Marilla Primary

The Issue

Currently, our incoming third graders only have two teachers. Last year we had 23, and 22 kids in each class, which were the largest class sizes in Marilla Primary. It would greatly benefit all of our children to be in a smaller class. At our last PTO meeting, Mr. Scofield said if we had another couple of kids coming, they would most likely need to give us another teacher. But I’m requesting another teacher, regardless of whether two more kids join. I know that personally, my daughter does better when a teacher can focus more on what she needs to be her best, and with less distractions. And that’s more likely to happen with less children in a class. Here are some benefits to smaller class sizes:

—Learning is enhanced: Not only do children learn more in smaller classes, they also learn faster. This means the class progresses through course material more quickly.

—Teachers can teach: Teachers of smaller classes have more opportunities to observe and assess the class as a whole, and the students as individuals.

—Classes become Community: With fewer students, kids can connect more closely with their peers and become more confident and comfortable when it comes to sharing their ideas and perspectives. This leads to lasting friendships.

—Opportunities to participate: Small groups means fewer voices, and that means they have more chances to speak up in class. They can apply the knowledge they’ve acquired as they participate in discussions and express their opinions.

—Focus on Learning: With more limited students, teachers can spend more time teaching the material and less time getting the attention of those who get distracted. Teachers can also cater to students’ different learning styles and ensure they stay engaged and understand what’s being taught.

—More feedback: Teachers have more time to individualize their feedback, making sure each child gets the help they need, and is reaching their potential.

—Students & Teachers can work one on one: This gives the teachers an opportunity to customize instruction and guidance.
