Ironbound needs a Dog Park

Safety: Dog parks reduce the likelihood that dogs will be let loose in park areas where they could interfere with other park users such as bicyclists, skate-boarders, and athletes.
Dog parks are popular with many people. Having one in our town can only add real value for potential home buyers looking for a pet-friendly community. Providing a space that is leash-free for dogs makes it less likely that owner will exercise their dogs off-leash in other areas, such as playgrounds and other public places.
Dog parks promote physical fitness and improve the mental state of owners.
For many people (particularly the elderly, singles and those with disabilities), the dogs really are their only companions. If they can go to a dog park, it gives them a reason to get dressed, go out, socialize, play with their dog, and strengthen that bond between them and their community. Dog parks provide the elderly and disabled owners with an easier more convenient way to interact with their dogs and other people. A dog park promotes friendships and a feeling of belonging to a community. Owning a dog encourages people to exercise. Taking a dog out has also been found to stimulate social interaction with other people (Journal of Nutrition and the Elderly, 1996).
In every community, there are dog owners who do not license their pets. By requiring licensing for dog park access, these owners may be more likely to license their dogs, providing more revenue for the town
Dogs allowed exercising off leash – running with other dogs, catching a ball, or working at obedience training – are happier, healthier and better behaved dogs.
Adequately exercised dogs make better neighbors than dogs who lack exercise. Dogs who exercise through vigorous play are less likely to create a nuisance, bark excessively, destroy property, or otherwise exhibit antisocial behavior.
In an era when people often are reluctant or even afraid to approach or converse with a stranger, off leash exercise areas bring people together and create a greater sense of community.
Access to a off leash park close to home is the safest and most effective way to ensure that owners socialize their dogs and provide them with ongoing experiences in the outside world.
