Six horses used at the 2025 Punchestown Festival have now been confirmed DEAD.
Among the dead are three horses used on Day 1 of the festival (29 April 2025). They were identified as:
6-year-old Master Otis who finished 3rd in the "Albert Bartlett Triple Crown Series Final Handicap Hurdle" race
8-year-old Kilta who suffered a fall in the same race
4-year-old horse Eagle Of Destiny who "looked to go wrong" and unseated jockey B O'Neill
Also confirmed dead was 5-year-old Scotcantou who was carrying jockey Rachael Blackmore. This horse finished 4th in the "Connolly's RED MILLS Irish EBF Auction Hurdle Series Final" race on Day 2 of the Punchestown festival.
7-year-old horse Lazer Wolf who finished 6th in the “Frontline Security Handicap Chase” the following day (1 May 2025) is also dead. As is 7-year-old British horse Meyo who was pulled up injured in the “Oaklodgelandscapes .ie Handicap Chase” race on the final day of the festival (3 May).
They are among the latest in an ever-growing list of horse racing victims.
1,279 horses have been killed at racecourses in Ireland since 2012, including 108 in 2024.
Horse Racing Ireland has in the past revealed the method of killing to be either lethal injection or a bullet in the head.
The death figures do not include the horses injured at racecourses, taken away and later killed elsewhere or the horses killed behind the scenes because they are not fast enough to win races.
Many more race horses are also killed in slaughterhouses. Between 2016 and 2023, 15,658 thoroughbreds were slaughtered at “Department-approved slaughter facilities” in Ireland.
ACTION ALERT
Don’t bet on horse racing or attend horse racing events.
Since 2001, the Irish Government has granted €1.46 Billion of scarce public funds to horse racing.
Contact the Taoiseach, Tanaiste and Finance Minister and demand an end to state funding to this gambling activity which causes so much suffering and death. Tell them to redirect the funds to the many deserving charities, health/homeless/environmental groups, sports clubs, animal rescue centres, etc crying out for funding.
