Two horses used in racing at Navan Racecourse last Saturday (4 March 2023) have been confirmed dead.
The horses were identified as 12-year-old Glenloe and 5-year-old Coolmeen Park.
Glenloe “suffered an injury” in the 3 mile “Navan Members Veterans Handicap Chase”. In the same race, horses Midnight Maestro and Difficult Decision burst blood vessels, with the latter having “blood at the nostrils post-race”
Also dead is Coolmeen Park who “weakened” and finished tenth in the “Navan Racecourse Handicap Hurdle“ race. Horse Simply Shabra suffered a fall in the same race.
In the previous race of the day - “Wesco Electrical Mares Maiden Hurdle” - two more horses fell.
Glenloe and Coolmeen Park are the latest in a growing list of horse deaths at racecourses around Ireland.
Over 1,000 horses have been killed at racecourses here in the past decade, including 107 last year. The sickening Horse Racing Ireland statistics came to light following a Dail Question from Paul Murphy TD.
Horse Racing Ireland – which has received more than €1.3 billion euros in government grants to-date – previously revealed the method of killing to be either lethal injection or a bullet in the head.
Their death figures do not include the horses injured at racecourses, taken away and later killed elsewhere or the horses killed behind the scenes because they are not fast enough to win races.
Many more race horses are also killed in slaughterhouses. Sickening stats obtained by Deputy Murphy last year show that between 2016 and 2022, 13,484 thoroughbred horses were slaughtered at Department-approved slaughter facilities in Ireland.
How many more horses have to suffer and die before the Irish Government stops ploughing vast amounts of taxpayers' money into this gambling business.
