Cork-based company Apex Global Resources Ltd  is being urged to stop sponsoring dog-killing greyhound racing.

The Professional Trades Recruitment Agency's name is attached to a racing event at Curraheen Park stadium. The semi-finals of the “Apex Global Resources Ltd Cork Oaks” took place at the track last weekend. €7,000 in prizemoney to the winner is on offer as well as a greyhound “breeder’s incentive” prize of €1,000.

The Managing Director of Apex Global Resources, Sean McGrath, was quoted on the Greyhound Racing Ireland website as saying: “Last year was the first time we sponsored at Curraheen Park and such was the success of the event, that we were delighted to continue again for 2024.” https://www.grireland.ie/talking-dogs/apex-global-resources-announces-continuation-as-title-sponsor-of-the-cork-oaks-at-curraheen-park-greyhound-stadium/

Last year, he stated: “We attended the final of The Irish Greyhound Laurels, and it was then we decided to explore sponsorship opportunities with Curraheen Park Greyhound Stadium.”

Shame on  Apex Global Resources for supporting greyhound racing despite all the revelations about cruelty and killing.

In an email to the company, it was pointed out that “Curraheen Park is one of the worst tracks in Ireland for greyhound injuries and deaths. 205 greyhounds have suffered injuries there and 80 died or were killed over the past nine years alone (including 15 injuries and 5 deaths last year). At tracks around Ireland since 2014, at least 3,307 greyhounds are known to have been injured and 1,194 killed.”

This is just the tip of the iceberg. The full horrors of greyhound racing were exposed on RTE Television's award-winning "Greyhounds Running For Their Lives" documentary. The programme revealed that around 6,000 dogs are killed behind the scenes every year simply because they are not fast enough to win races. It included horrifying scenes of dogs being delivered to knackeries to be shot in the head. One shot dog was seen writhing on the ground in agony as his merciless owner drove away https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYTb2qBjlMM

A damning report which Greyhound Racing Ireland attempted to hide, estimated that, for example, a total of 17,962 greyhounds were culled in 2013, 2014 and 2015. They were killed for “failure to produce qualifying times”, “failure to produce desired entry level times” and for an “unacceptable decline in performance”.

Greyhound racing is responsible for so much suffering and death that many of the biggest animal welfare charities in Ireland, the US and the UK are calling for it to be ended. They include the RSPCA, Dogs Trust UK, Blue Cross, Woodgreen Pets, GREY2K USA, the League Against Cruel Sports and Scottish SPCA. Here in the Ireland, Dogs Trust has also announced that it wants to see greyhound racing ended as soon as possible. The CEO of the ISPCA, meanwhile, has stated that the group “supports a winding down of greyhound racing in Ireland”.

Apex Global Resources Ltd is one of a very few businesses that disgracefully continue to support greyhound racing. Numerous companies have already disassociated from the activity. These include Toyota Ireland, Opel Ireland, Heineken Ireland/Murphy’s, Dublin Bus, Eir Sport, Tesco Ireland, Electric Ireland, Air France, Applegreen, Barry’s Tea, Hyde Irish Whiskey, Permanent TSB, Maldron Hotels, Clayton Hotels, Hertz, Expedia, Galway Crystal, FBD Insurance, Botanica International, Voucher Cloud, North Star Hotel Dublin, Metropole Hotel Cork, Treacy’s Hotel Waterford, The Mayson Hotel, Trip Indicator, Food For Thought (the official publication of the Restaurants Association of Ireland), DishCult, MummyPages.ie, Ireland Before You Die, Dublin Convention Bureau, In Your Pocket City Guides, etc.

ACTION ALERT

Urge Apex Global Resources Ltd to show compassion for the dogs who suffer and die and end its sponsorship of greyhound racing.
