Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dundalk is being urged to disassociate from dog-killing greyhound racing.

This follows a tweet from Dundalk stadium which describes the hotel as a partner hotel - “We are greyhound racing every weekend. Get your summer plans off to a start with an exciting Race & Stay package with our partner hotel the Crowne Plaza Dundalk”. https://twitter.com/DundalkStadium/status/1650861701024337922

In an appeal to the manager of the Crowne Plaza Dundalk, ICABS highlighted the suffering and death in greyhound racing.

“In the past eight years alone at Dundalk Stadium, 160 greyhounds suffered injuries and 77 died or were killed by a track vet,” we stated. "This includes 16 injuries and 11 deaths in 2022. The 11 greyhounds who were killed had suffered hock fracture/injury (5), leg fracture (5) and wrist fracture (1). Among them were three who were 'euthanised' at a single race meeting on 3rd September 2022. Another greyhound died at Dundalk Stadium last year after suffering a skull fracture during trials.”

Hotel management was also told that at races around Ireland in 2022, 287 greyhounds were injured and 122 killed and that since 2014, at least 3,050 greyhounds sustained injuries and 1,060 died or were killed at races. The death figures do not include the greyhounds injured at tracks and later killed elsewhere, or the thousands of greyhounds who are killed every year because they are not fast enough to win races.

RTE’s award-winning “Greyhounds running for their lives” documentary revealed that around 6,000 greyhounds are culled annually. It included shocking footage of dogs being delivered to a knackery where they were shot in the head and dumped in a skip. One shot dog was seen writhing on the ground in agony as his merciless owner drove away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYTb2qBjlMM

A damning report which Greyhound Racing Ireland attempted to hide, estimated that, for example, a total of 17,962 greyhounds were culled in 2013, 2014 and 2015. They were killed for “failure to produce qualifying times”, “failure to produce desired entry level times” and for an “unacceptable decline in performance”.

Some of the biggest animal welfare charities in Ireland, the US and the UK are calling for an end to greyhound racing due to all the suffering and death. They include the RSPCA, Dogs Trust UK, Blue Cross, Woodgreen Pets, GREY2K USA Worldwide, Caged Nationwide, the League Against Cruel Sports and Scottish SPCA. Here in the Ireland, Dogs Trust has also announced that it wants to see greyhound racing ended as soon as possible. The CEO of the ISPCA, meanwhile, has stated that the group “supports a winding down of greyhound racing in Ireland”.

We hope Crowne Plaza Dundalk will say NO to greyhound racing and stop the “race and stay” packages. A growing list of companies have rejected greyhound racing/removed greyhound racing from their websites. These include Maldron Hotels, Clayton Hotels, North Star Hotel Dublin, Metropole Hotel Cork, Treacy’s Hotel Waterford, The Mayson Hotel, Air France (which deleted Irish greyhound racing from 44 of its international websites), Toyota Ireland, Opel Ireland, Heineken Ireland/Murphy’s, Dublin Bus, Eir Sport, Tesco Ireland, Electric Ireland, Applegreen, Barry’s Tea, Hyde Irish Whiskey, Expedia, Galway Crystal, FBD Insurance, Galway Tourism, Tramore.ie, Botanica International, Voucher Cloud, Permanent TSB, Trip Indicator, In Your Pocket City Guides, Food For Thought (the official publication of the Restaurants Association of Ireland), Hertz, MummyPages.ie, Ireland Before You Die, Dublin Convention Bureau, DishCult, etc.
