Mark Tighe's excellent coverage of the multiple woes afflicting the Irish greyhound industry has one overriding message - it is a toxic brand ('Greyhound Agency Collared Over Protests'). This is evidenced by the fact that most banks, vets and UK betting companies do not want to be associated with it. Hardly surprising, given the industry's appalling animal welfare record, its economic unviability, and the ever dwindling popularity of racing among the Irish public.
No doubt this realisation is prompting NewEra's reluctance to approve the expenditure of €3.4 million on upgrading a number of greyhound racing stadia.
The government needs to stop throwing good money after bad. It is time to amend legislation which, since 2001, has led to almost €300 million being given to this moribund industry.
