In a letter published in the Sunday Independent, Greyhound Racing Ireland’s CEO claimed that it “has, as a core priority, the maintaining of animal welfare at the centre of the industry” (11 April 2021, https://www.independent.ie/opinion/letters/northern-ireland-and-the-road-to-violence-40299175.html

What is actually at the centre of this deplorable “industry” is much suffering and death, based as it is on overbreeding dogs, choosing the fastest and getting rid of many of the rest.

RTE's award-winning “Greyhounds Running for Their Lives” revealed that thousands of greyhounds are killed every year because they don’t make the grade.

A damning report commissioned by Greyhound Racing Ireland - which it attempted to bury - estimated, for example, that a total of 17,962 greyhounds were culled in 2013, 2014 and 2015 for “failure to produce qualifying times or desired entry level times” and “unacceptable decline in performance”.

There are many more victims at races around the country. In the past six years alone, 2,146 greyhounds sustained painful injuries, including broken legs, and 715 were destroyed by track vets. Others have collapsed and died with heart attacks.

Greyhound Racing Ireland is quick to quote rehoming stats but these only cover a fraction of the dogs exiting racing. Furthermore, there are doubts about the accuracy of its figures, given recent revelations that greyhounds listed as “rehomed” on the GRI website were, in reality, exported for use in racing and coursing in China and Pakistan, countries with little or no animal welfare where horrific cruelty occurs.

With plummeting track attendances, sponsors running a mile and growing calls on the government to scrap the grants that keep greyhound racing afloat, the time has come to stop the cruelty and killing and finally let greyhound racing die a death.

Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland (formerly the Irish Greyhound Board) has been granted more than a QUARTER OF A BILLION EUROS, including €16.8 million for 2020 and another €19.2 million for 2021. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.
