Greyhound racing has been removed from the Hertz website after the car rental company was told about  the suffering and deaths of greyhounds.

Following an ICABS appeal, a page relating to Newbridge track was deleted from a Hertz+ section of the company's website which lists tours and activities around the world.

In our appeal to Hertz, we stated: “The website presents a visit to Newbridge greyhound track as ‘a thrilling occasion that is uniquely Irish’ but we we wish to point out that Ireland’s national tourism bodies, Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland, have both stopped promoting this activity - due to revelations about awful cruelty and killing and fears that it damages Ireland's reputation as a tourist destination.”

Highlighted to Hertz was the fact that dogs suffer and die at Newbridge track. In recent years, at least 90 greyhounds suffered leg/hock/shoulder/muscle injuries there and 39 were killed by a track vet. At tracks around Ireland in the same period, at least 2,146 greyhounds suffered injuries and 715 were killed.

Also brought to the company’s attention was were the shocking revelations in RTE’s "Greyhounds running for their lives". The documentary, which exposed the annual killing of thousands of greyhounds who don’t make the grade, contained horrifying scenes of greyhounds being delivered to a knackery where they were shot in the head and dumped into a skip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYTb2qBjlMM

A big THANK YOU to Hertz for following the many other companies which have rejected greyhound racing, including Air France (which removed Irish greyhound racing from 44 of its international websites), Toyota Ireland, Opel Ireland, Heineken Ireland/Murphy's, Dublin Bus, Eir Sport, Tesco Ireland, Electric Ireland, Applegreen, Barry's Tea, Hyde Irish Whiskey, Galway Crystal, FBD Insurance, Botanica International, Voucher Cloud, Permanent TSB, Maldron Hotels, Clayton Hotels, North Star Hotel Dublin, Metropole Hotel Cork, Treacy's Hotel Waterford, Trip Indicator, In Your Pocket City Guides, Food For Thought (the official publication of the Restaurants Association of Ireland), etc.
