Petition updateIrish Government: Stop Giving Millions of Euro to Cruel Greyhound Racing“A CAR CRASH INTERVIEW”: Off the Ball presenter reacts to interview with GRI Chairman
Irish Council Against Blood SportsMullingar, Ireland
Jan 25, 2021

A Business Post feature on Greyhound Racing Ireland chairman Frank Nyhan has been described as “a car crash interview” during an Off The Ball Sunday paper review [17 January 2021].

Reacting to the article, programme presenter Joe Molloy commented: “One other point - given the week that has been, with the Mother and Baby Homes report [which found that at least 9,000 children died in 18 mother and baby homes across Ireland] - jeez, the PR here - [quoting Nyhan:] ‘we probably didn’t treat animals terribly well in the past but we didn’t treat humans very well either, based on what we’ve been reading this week. So, you know, you have to learn from mistakes and move on.’ This is a car crash interview. I just couldn’t believe this.” (Later in the programme, he went on to say that, “on reflection, that’s a bit harsh”).

Mr Molloy also challenged a statement from the GRI chairman that "an awful lot of people who are instinctively against greyhound racing have never been at a greyhound race", responding: “when he says people who dislike the sport have never been to a greyhound race - you don’t need to have been to a greyhound race to have an opinion on what’s been happening to greyhounds in this country over however long.”

Listeners were reminded of harrowing scenes from the award-winning “RTE Investigates: Greyhounds Running for their Lives” documentary which revealed that 6,000 greyhounds are culled (shot in the head, etc) every year because they are not fast enough. An extract from the Business Post article was read out - “In a scene that still gets shared on social media by critics of the industry, the documentary shows one dog clearly nervous on arrival at the yard while the man who brought it waits in his van. A single shot is fired to the back of the dog’s head, and the man drives off after being handed the dogs’ collar, while his greyhound writhes for the last seconds of its life.” See https://youtu.be/ZYTb2qBjlMM?t=3206

“Anyone who saw that documentary will have been absolutely appalled,” programme guest Dave McIntyre from Virgin Media TV stated. “[Nyhan’s] point that those who are critics of the industry are those who have never been to a race meeting - that’s utterly irrelevant. People would have similar issues with various sports, various aspects of life without ever having been personally involved themselves. I don’t buy that argument at all.”

“If he was hoping to convince the naysayers or those on the fence or those with a feeling of indifference towards the greyhound racing industry, that it is a sport that should endure, he certainly didn’t win me over,” he said, adding that he “never really understood the prevalence of the greyhound racing industry in this country”.

ACTION ALERT

STOP THE STATE FUNDING FOR GREYHOUND RACING

Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland (formerly the Irish Greyhound Board) has been granted more than a QUARTER OF A BILLION EUROS, including €16.8 million for 2020 and another €19.2 million for 2021. The government should not be funding an activity that is responsible for so much suffering and death. Urge the Taoiseach, Tánaiste, Agriculture Minister and Finance Minister to stop the funding and back a ban on cruel greyhound racing. Tell them to redirect the money into the health bodies, sports clubs, homeless charities, animal rescue centres and environmental groups crying out for support.
